Career experience
Dates Brief description of work or position
From To
8/70 6/72 Consultant, Ledgemont Laboratory, Kennecott

exploration methods - dielectric systems, induced polarization, magnetic loss, and
electromagnetic surveying.
8/71 Electrical engineer, National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, TX: designed

vacuum to 10-8 Torr, at temperatures from 25-900oC.
9/71 6/72 Research assistant, Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Francis Bitter National Magnet
Laboratory, Cambridge, MA: performed measurements and computer modelling of magnetic loss
in electromagnetic systems.
7/72 7/73 Scientist, Lockheed Electronics Co., Houston
Aerospace Systems Division, Houston, TX:developed techniques for studying physical
properties of lunar samples under laboratory simulated lunar conditions. Co-investigator
of NASA Lunar Sample Program project "Electrical Properties of Lunar Samples"
and lunar sample sub-curator for Physics Branch, NASA Johnson Space Center.
9/73 7/75 Research Engineer, Dept. of Physics, Univ.
of Toronto; David W. Strangway, Professor. Investigated the electrical properties
mechanisms in lunar and terrestrial rocks, their correlation with other physical
properties, and their variation under controlled environments (cryogenic to 1400oC, ultra
high vacuum to high pressure, oxygen fugacity, water content, etc.). Lunar sample curator
for Geophysics Laboratory. Consultant to Kennecott Copper Corp. and the Geological Survey
of Canada.
7/72 4/88 Co-Investigator in NASA Lunar Sample Program.
8/75 10/94 Research geophysicist GS-15/8, U.S. Geological Survey, Branch of Petrophysics
and Remote Sensing; Ken Watson, Branch Chief (75-80) and Graham Hunt, Branch Chief
(80-81). Developed and operated the Petrophysics Laboratory, performing research on the
physical properties of rocks and minerals under laboratory simulated conditions of their
natural environments. These investigations resulted in compilations of fundamental
physical properties data, models of the physical and chemical mechanisms behind the
observed data, and new directions for the application of field geophysics.
8/75 9/88 Project Chief - Geothermal Petrophysics 9790-01699
7/76 10/81 Principal Investigator - ERDA/DOE DGE 9790-70037
These two projects investigated the physical properties of geological materials from
geothermal systems in lab simulations of high-temperature, high-pressure hydrothermal
environments. Results to date have included data and models of the electrical, seismic,
textural, and thermal properties of rocks in geothermal systems with full physical and
chemical environmental conditions to 2 km deep in hydrothermal systems and partial
environmental control to 40 km deep in magmatic systems. One conclusion was the necessity
for free water to play a larger role in the physical properties of the lower crust than
had been previously thought. The project is continuing by measuring the properties of
alteration products and similar materials which have been little studied.
10/76 10/77 Project Chief - Chemical Resources Petrophysics 9790-01862
This project was a laboratory investigation of the physical properties of oil shale and
lithium clays, producing measurements in support of other field-geophysical projects.
10/76 1/83 Project Chief - Mineral Resources Petrophysics 9790-01861
This project has a long term goal of producing a comprehensive catalog of the physical
properties of minerals, and a representative statistical description of the physical
properties of rocks. Preliminary catalogs of the density and dielectric properties of
minerals and rocks have already been published. This project also is producing models of
water-mineral physical chemical interactions in support of induced polarization and
complex resistivity phenomena for use in the interpretation of geophysical exploration
studies in mineral exploration. This project and the next project resulted in the
invention of the nonlinear complex resistivity logging technique and its application to
mineral problems.
10/77 10/81 Project Chief - Uranium Petrophysics 9790-02059
This project investigated the electrical and textural properties of uranium and associated
minerals found in uranium mineral deposits. The project produced laboratory measurements
on core samples in support of the borehole logging projects, and it developed models of
induced polarization and complex resistivity within and near ore zones. Invented the
nonlinear complex resistivity laboratory core measurement apparatus and borehole logging
equipment. The nonlinear complex resistivity measurements produce detailed information
about water-rock chemical interactions, which are not yet fully understood. They have been
used, however, to successfully delineate barren lithologies from those bearing metallic
oxides and sulfides which undergo oxidation-reduction reactions from those bearing clays
or zeolites that exhibit strong cation exchange reactions.
6/77 1/79 Principal Investigator - NASA SR&T Program 9790-70046
This project produced laboratory measurements of microwave scattering parameters in a
vacuum microwave-anechoic chamber to assist in the interpretation of lunar and planetary
microwave radar and radio metric measurements and in the design of future space missions
(such as the Venus Orbiting Imaging Radar).
1/78 6/79 Principal Investigator - NASA Planetary Geology Program 9790-70026
This project produced data and predictions on how some terrestrial exploration techniques
such as complex resistivity and ground penetrating radar might be used to explore Mars.
5/77 9/78 Project co-investigator - Used ground penetrating radar and other geophysical
tools to help Oscar Ferrians determine the environmental impact of the Trans-Alaska
Pipeline on tundra and permafrost problems. Demonstrated the utility of the ground
penetrating radar to map and detect variability in the permafrost caused by natural and
manmade events (such as the construction of a road).
11/80 8/81 Acting Chief, Branch of Petrophysics and Remote Sensing during the illness of
Graham Hunt.
8/81 1/83 Supervisory Geophysicist, Branch of Petrophysics and Remote Sensing; Bob
Tilling, Chief, Office of Geochemistry and Geophysics.
As Branch Chief, I supervised about 90 people located in Denver, CO, Reston, VA, Menlo
Park, CA, and Flagstaff, AZ with an annual budget of about $4,000,000. Wrote and
implemented a computer program to track and predict fiscal and personnel matters for the
Branch. Participated in the successful fight to return control of the Fairchild-Porter
aircraft to the Branch from the Office of Aircraft Services.
10/82 12/89 Principal Investigator - DOE LLRWP Surface Geophysics
2/83 10/94 Research Geophysicist, USGS Branch of Geophysics; Ray Watts, Jeff Daniels, Dal
Stanley, Dave Fitterman, Chief, Shallow Crustal Geophysics Section After resurrecting the
"pre-Branch Chief" era projects, the tools of the Petrophysics Laboratory,
ground penetrating radar, nonlinear complex resistivity, and induction electromagnetics
are being used to attack problems of radioactive and chemical waste disposal and
migration. The induction EM techniques quickly find inorganic contaminants. The NLCR
technique identifies in situ clay/organic reactions. The ground penetrating radar maps
detailed stratigraphic cross-sections. The combination yields information of value to
hydrologic modelers, and provides a non-invasive technique to locate and monitor waste
interactions with ground water and minerals.
2/83 10/94 Project Chief- Toxic Waste Geophysics 9380-03587 WRD
2/83 4/84 Principal Investigator - EPA Plume Sensing: feasibility of using complex
resistivity to locate underground contaminants DW14930191-01-1
8/84 10/88 Project Chief - NLCR Clay-Petroleum Reactions 9380-03824
This project is using nonlinear complex resistivity logging to observe clay-organic
reactions, attack the shaly-sand problem, and investigate petroleum formation processes
that are still active today.
